Post flood rehabilitation programme starts in Jamalpur

JAMALPUR, Aug 23 (BSS): Post flood rehabilitation programme has been taken up to offset the losses, suffered during the recent flood, in agriculture sector, involving Tk. 2,02,70,550, in the district.
Under the programme a total of 18,750 small and marginal farmers will get seedlings and fertiliser free of cost to cultivate 2,500 hectares of land.
According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources, the support will be provided for cultivating Boro, wheat, mustard, high-breed maize, pulse (Mosur) and vegetables.
Other than the programme, the DAE will disburse aman seedlings free of cost among 900 farmers to cultivate 300 hectares of land.
When contacted Deputy Director, DAE, Ziaul Haq Gazi said, farmers, shortly after receding flood water, set up comprehensive seed beds on their own initiative.
Meanwhile, Education and Engineering Department (EED) has implemented different projects in Jamalpur and Sherpur districts during the current fiscal year 2006-2007.
The sources said under the projects 20 flood shelters were built in the districts. With the financial support of the World Bank a total of 14 flood shelters at a cost of Taka 50 million was set up in Jamalpur district. The other six flood shelters were set up in Sherpur district at a cost of Taka 18 million with the support of Japanese government.
On the other hand, the department has been constructing ten college buildings in the districts. Of them six are being built in Jamalpur and four in Sherpur with government fund amounting to Taka 30 million, EED sources said and added 80 per cent of work of the buildings have been completed.
The EED will implement the construction work of 21 institutes at a cost of Taka 52.5 million in two districts. The work on 12 in Jamalpur and 9 in Sherpur are under "selected non government secondary school development project".
Meanwhile, the department has taken renovation and repair work of all government colleges and schools in the districts at a cost of Taka 20 million.
With the completion of the works about 60,000 students and teachers will be benefitted, EED sources said.
