The World Human Rights Day will be observed in the country today (Wednesday) as elsewhere across the globe, report agencies.
The UN General Assembly proclaimed December 10 as Human Rights Day in 1950 with a view to bringing to the attention 'of the peoples of the world' the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as the common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations.
The theme of this year's day is: 'Human Rights 365' that encompasses the idea that every day is Human Rights Day.
Various organisations have chalked out elaborate programmes, including discussions, rallies and human chains, to mark the day.
Human Rights International-Bangladesh will form a human chain in front of the National Press Club in the city at 10:00 am.
Meanwhile, President Md Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon have issued separate messages on the occasion.
Meanwhile, President Md Abdul Hamid Tuesday hoped that the human rights organisations would play an important role alongside the government in protecting human rights in the country.
In a message on the eve of the International Human Rights Day, the President said the present government is very much sincere in protecting human rights in the country.
He said human rights issues have been incorporated in the country's constitution as fundamental rights to protect rights of the people of the country.
The President said the theme of this year's human rights day 'Human Rights 365' is very important and hoped that it would encourage all to work throughout the year in establishing human rights.
He wished the day's programme a success.
