RANGPUR, July 20 (BSS): Market price of green chilli started falling across the northern districts in recent days, market sources and the commoners said Monday.
The consumers, however, were still reeling from the effect of recent surge in prices of this item.
The per kg retail price of green chilli now came down to Tk 120 to 130 at most places of the northern districts including greater Rangpur though the same was around Tk 180 and 200 per kg even a few days ago.
The price of green chilli was at Tk 3 to 10 per kg last year during the months of June and July across the northern districts that hit the growers then everywhere in the northern areas including Rangpur, the sources and farmers said.
But, present market situation with green chilli, a widely consumed essential commodity, is a complete reverse of its last year's prices.
The growers seem to be very happy with the abnormally high prices of the commodity this time though they were so depressed last year at this time when they had to sell their produce at throw-away prices.
The retailers told the news agency that inadequate supply to the local markets following large shipments of the condiment to Dhaka and other places of the country has triggered its prices to sky rocket.
Deputy Director of DAE, Rangpur Agriculture Zone, Nur Mohammad said that the heavy rainfall of 166 mm on July 2 in Rangpur caused some damage to the green chilli plants reducing its production.
However, no shortage of supply were noticeable in the local markets as all of the retailers were found to have adequate stock of green chilli in their shops. Consumers are confused over the high prices.
