A primary education system under a unified core curriculum to ensure solid foundation for quality higher education was needed, speakers told a seminar in the city Saturday, reports UNB.
"A state stands on its education system, while the whole education system stands on its primary education," Dhaka University (DU) Vice Chancellor (VC) Professor Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique said while addressing the seminar.
Education Watch, a specialised magazine, organised the seminar titled 'The Education Policy: Some Proposals' at Poet Sufia Kamal Auditorium at the National Museum where university professors, senior journalists and lawyers took part in the discussion.
The DU VC said the education system from class I to class VIII should be a scientific and intergraded one so that all children could be brought up as good citizens with equal education.
"All schools and madrasahs should be run under a single core curriculum," he said, adding that there was no alternative to making education compulsory for children up to class VIII.
About the committee formed by the government to formulate a modern education policy, Dr Arefin said the committee would submit its report reviewing all the reports of previous education commissions to formulate the policy.
