FE Report | March 11, 2019 00:00:00

The committee investigating Thursday's boat capsize at Sadarghat point of the Buriganga is unlikely to submit its report today (Monday), an official said.

"We're gathering information and collecting data. We need some time for a full investigation," said Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) director Md Sahjahan.

After doing this, the committee will prepare and submit a complete report on the incident, he told the FE.

The boat capsized in the river, claiming six lives and injuring one of a family.

The ill-fated seven members embarked the boat to catch a launch at Sadarghat for attending a wedding ceremony in Shariatpur.

But the boat sank after colliding with launch 'Surobhi' near Sadarghat pontoon No. 13 around 10:00 pm, according to Sadarghat river police camp.

Divers later recovered the bodies of Mim (8) and her sister Mahir (6), Delwar (38) and his son Zunaid (7), Jamsheda (30) and Shahida (32). They also rescued 38-year-old Shahjalal who sustained injuries on his legs.

He is undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation.

The BIWTA formed a three-member committee to probe the tragic incident.

The committee was scheduled to submit its report by today (Monday).

A BIWTA official said as the victims were attempting to get on board Surobhi, the boat overturned for massive waves created by the launch's propeller.
