Probe body visits Jaflong stone quarry


SYLHET, Jan 4: The probe committee formed to ascertain the cause of the death of five poor labourers, including three members of a family, while extracting stones in a quarry of Jaflong, visited the place of incident on Thursday.
The three-member probe body formed the day before with Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) Syed Aminur Rahman as its head visited the stone quarry in Mandir Jum area of Jaflong. The committee members collected information in presence of Assistant Director of Mineral Resources Directorate Alamgir Kabir, Environment Department's Assistant Director Parvez Ahmed and Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA)'s Regional Coordinator Shah Shaheda Akhtar.
Meanwhile, an accused was arrested following a case filed on Wednesday accusing 15 persons in connection with the tragic incident that killed the five stone extractors on Tuesday, said Officer-in- charge Hillol Roy.
A total of 28 people died when they were engaged in illegal stone extraction on different spots in the outgoing year in Sylhet district only, BELA's divisional coordinator Shah Shaheda Akhtar said.
