Prof Yunus asked to inform court before foreign trip

FE REPORT | February 06, 2024 00:00:00

The High Court (HC) on Monday stayed an order of the Labour Appellate Tribunal that on January 28 suspended the conviction and sentence of Nobel Laureate Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus and three other Grameen Telecom officials in a labour law violation case.

However, the bail granted to convicted accused including Prof Yunus will continue and they have to inform the Labour Appellate Tribunal before going abroad, said the HC.

The HC bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Kazi Ebadoth Hossain passed the order after hearing a revision petition filed by the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments (DIFE) challenging the Labour Appellate Tribunal's order.

The HC bench also issued a rule upon the concerned bodies of the government to explain as to why the order passed by the Labour Appellate Tribunal on January 28 suspending the conviction and sentence of Prof Yunus and others should not be scrapped.

Lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan appeared in the court on behalf of the DIFE, while Barrister Abdullah Al Mamun represented the state.

Lawyer Khurshid Alalm Khan said, "A verdict of a criminal case has two parts--- conviction and sentence. Conviction cannot be suspended and the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has given decision regarding the issue. We challenged the stay order on the convection of the case."

Upon hearing the petition, the HC stayed the Tribunal order suspending conviction of the case, said the lawyer adding that the HC bench also asked the Tribunal to dispose of the appeal expeditiously. Barrister Mamun said when a court admits appeal of a criminal case for hearing then the sentence of the verdict has been stayed automatically till disposal of the appeal. No separate order is needed for this, said the lawyer.
