Bangladesh spent about Tk 710 million on a project to eliminate child labour. It refrained 55 thousand children from working in risky jobs, reports BSS.

This was revealed in a report published by the finance ministry in its Bangladesh economic review 2014.

The review said the labour and employment ministry was implementing the programme.

It said already 40 thousand children had been provided non-formal education and skill development training. Besides, parents of another 50 thousand children have been trained so that they get jobs.

In the third phase, 50 thousand child labourers would be provided 18-month non-formal education and materials for self-employment.

To implement the project, about Tk 690 million had been provided from the revenue budget. The project would end this month.

The report further said in the fourth phase, starting in July this year, a project worth Tk about 710 million will be taken up with the assistance from the Royal

government of the Netherlands to eliminate child labour in metropolitan Dhaka.

On completion of this project,  26 thousand children would get non-formal education and another 13 thousand would get technical training.

A child labour unit (CLU) has been formed in the ministry to expedite the project.
