Properties worth Tk 490m damaged by recent floods in Rangpur

RANGPUR, Oct 19 (BSS): The recent floods damaged properties worth Tk 490 million in various sectors in the district, official sources said today.
The sources said detailed reports of the damage caused by the recent floods in the district were sent to the higher authorities last week by the district administration after conducting assessments of the same by the concerned departments.
The sector-wise damage caused are: a total of 226 houses were damaged totally and another 2,650 houses and 67 km roads were damaged partially causing losses of Taka 6,10,70,000 in the sector in Gangachara, Pirgachha and Kawnia Upazilas on the Teesta basin.
Standing crops including T-Aman paddy and vegetables on 486 hectares were damaged totally and another 8,858 hectares partially in the affected areas causing losses of Taka 5,04,98,000 in agriculture sector here.
Large portions of embankments were damaged and 3.826 km partially that caused losses of Taka 26,95,00,000. Besides 8.667 km long portions of the flood control structures and devices of nine ongoing projects were damaged causing losses of Taka 10,23,50,000 by the recent deluge.
Some 271 ponds were flooded washing away fishes worth Taka 18,85,000 in the pisciculture sector throughout the district during the recent floods. The animal husbandry sector incurred a loss of Taka 80,000 as three cows, 14 goats and five sheep died after being drowned in the floodwaters in the district.
A total of 16 buildings of the primary schools were partially damaged causing a loss of Taka 3,85,000 in the affected areas of the district by the floodwaters. Besides, 853 tube wells were damaged causing a loss of Taka 11,94,200 and more losses of Taka 31,91,500 was incurred as 3,250 latrines were totally damaged by the floods.
The district and upazila administrations, Department of Agriculture Extension, Water Development Board, District Fisheries Department, District Livestocks Department, District Primary Education Office and Department of Public Health and Engineering conducted the assessments of losses caused by the floods.
When contacted, District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Rafikul Islam told the news agency that detailed reports of the damage caused by the recent two-phase flash floods have already been sent to the higher authorities with necessary recommendations and suggestions for the rehabilitation activities and future action plans to reduce the losses to the minimum during natural calamities in future.
