A number of people covered their faces and eyes with red clothes as well as used red-coloured profiles and cover photos on their Facebook accounts on Tuesday.

They did it as part of a campaign of the quota reform protesters, to counter the government's decision to observe national mourning on the day in remembrance of those killed during the recent anti-quota movement.

The decision to observe the national mourning on Tuesday was taken in a cabinet meeting on Monday with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair. The government officials wore black badges, and supporters of the ruling Awami League used black photos on their Facebook accounts.

In an opposing move, the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, the organising body of the quota reform protesters, urged the supporters of their movement to use red-coloured photos on Facebook accounts.

Abdul Hannan Masud, a coordinator of the movement, said they considered the government's decision to observe national mourning as a mockery to the victims.

Meanwhile, the Jahangirnagar University (JU) administration observed mourning day on Tuesday in line with the national programme.

JU Vice Chancellor (VC) Professor Dr. Nurul Alam, along with the pro-VCs and treasurer, participated in the commemoration by wearing black badges, though only a few officials joined the programme.

Rejecting the state mourning, teachers from various departments, under the banner of Jahangirnagar Against Oppression, staged a march, in which approximately fifty teachers participated.

They covered their eyes and faces with red clothes in solidarity with the students. Around fifty students from the Anti-Discrimination Movement also joined the protest.

At 12:30 pm, the procession commenced from the Shaheed Minar area. The participants observed a minute's silence in front of the newly built Student-Mass Martyrs Monument. The procession then returned to the Shaheed Minar, where a brief rally was held.
