Auto-rickshaw drivers, rickshaw pullers and owners of these carriages laid a siege to the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) office in Anderkilla Tuesday, demanding a ban on battery-run rickshaws, reports bdnews24.com.
City Mayor M Manjur Alam remained confined to his office due to the protest that started around 10:00 am on the day.
The protesters lifted the siege following an assurance by the mayor.
The mayor held a meeting with a delegation of the agitators.
The protesters withdrew the siege around 12:00 pm.
Md Wazi Wallah, adviser to the four protesting organisations, alleged that new battery-run rickshaws were hitting the road every day in defiance of a High Court order.
He said police launched a drive to seize the rickshaws last month but it stopped within a week.
They, however, threatened blockade of all city entry points if their demands were not met by June 10.
