Additional Police Commissioner (Crime and Operations) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) SN Md Nazrul Islam has urged the people to provide exact information on extortionists to facilitate taking legal action against them by the law enforcers.
Observing that the extortionists do not have any political identity, he said, "The extortionists have no political affiliation. We must face them socially."
Mr Nazrul Islam made the call and observation while addressing a view-exchange meeting with the city dwellers at Hazaribagh in the capital.
He said that a new history was created in Bangladesh on August 5, 2024 with the political changeover.
He also said those who had sacrificed their lives during the July-August 2024 uprising against Sheikh Hasina had a dream.
He added it is the responsibility of all to realise the July-August martyrs' dream.
Mr Nazrul Islam called upon the city dwellers to be police- friendly, urging them not only to abide by the law by themselves but also inspire others to follow the same.
He observed that if everyone plays his or her responsible role from their respective positions then it is possible to establish a nice and well social system.
He also urged the local people to provide information about drug dealers and juvenile crime gang members.
The local people said that they wanted a Bangladesh free from discrimination and corruption.
They also assured the police of all-out cooperation from them.
Deputy Police Commissioner of DMP Ramna division Md Masud Alam presided over the event also attended by local people including students, heads of different educational institutes and leaders of different political parties.
Meanwhile, DMP detective branch Motijheel division has arrested a person in possession of 20 kg hashish from Gabtoli area of the capital.
The arrestee was identified as Sajidul Haque (27).
Deputy Police Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) Muhammad Talebur Rahman said acting on a tipoff, a team of detective police personnel of Khilgaon zone under Motijheel division detained him from Gabtoli under Darussalam Police Station in the city at 10:50 pm on Thursday.
He said that DB of Motijheel division got information that three persons were staying on road in front of Parbat Cinema Hall for selling hashish.
Additional deputy police commissioner of DB Motijheel division Rafiudfin Muhammad Zubair along with his team rushed to area and nabbed Sajidul.
Two others fled the scene sensing presence of the police.
Value of the seized narcotic item will be estimated Tk0.4 million.
A case was filed with Darussalam Police Station under the Narcotics Control Act.
The arrestee Sajedul confessed that he was staying on the spot for selling hashish. Sajedul used to sell narcotic items at different locations of the city after procuring them from different parts of the country.
