FE REPORT
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) members arrested four individuals on Monday after a shooting incident in the capital's Kafrul area over an extortion demand of Tk 10 million (one crore) from a garment businessman.
Company Commander of RAB-4, K N Rai Niyoti, informed the media about it at a press briefing at RAB-4 headquarters in the capital's Mirpur-1 area on Monday.
He said the four persons - Rana, Md Sagar Sheikh, Md Kalu, and Shashi - were arrested from Mirpur area during an operation.
On Saturday (18 April), Kamrul Islam, owner of AKM Apparels, was working in his office in Kafrul area when 12 to 13 unidentified miscreants entered the room. They threatened him and demanded Tk 10 million.
When he refused, two miscreants took out pistols and fired two rounds of blank shots inside the office. The attackers also vandalised the office locker and threatened to kill him, if the money was not paid within three days. They also took away the DVR and hard disk of the CCTV system before leaving.
The RAB-4 official said Kamrul Islam later filed a case at the Kafrul Police Station. RAB conducted an investigation and arrested four suspects in connection with the incident.
Rana was the planner of the incident. He selected the factory after conducting a survey, as the area was relatively remote with poor access roads and considered suitable for extortion.
The arrestees were involved in extortion, drug trading, and other criminal activities in Mirpur, Kafrul and the surrounding areas. Several cases have already been filed against them with different police stations under the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, he added.
