FE REPORT

Agitating students of Jagannath University have demanded resignation of all the members of the university's Proctoral Body.

They made the demand at a rally organised at the university's Sculpture Square on Tuesday.

Students of various departments participated in this programme organised under the banner of 'Jagannath University Against Oppression'.

In the programme, they showed 'Red Cards' against sexual harassment as well as administrative and academic harassment. They also demanded expeditious investigation into all kinds of oppression and trial of those found guilty.

The students announced that they would hold a press conference at 1.00 pm today (Wednesday). They will place their demand and describe the current situation on the campus in the press conference.

Law Department student of Jagannath University Fairuz Sadaf Abontika's body was found hanging in her Cumilla home on Friday night.

Before Abontika's death, there was a Facebook post of her accusing Raihan Siddique Amman, one of Abontika's classmates, of sexual harassment and alleging that Assistant Proctor Deen Islam verbally abused her and sided with Amman, when she complained.

Students of the Jagannath University have been holding various programmes protesting the incident.

Saqib Sobhan, a student of Film and Television Dept, said, "We will fight against any kind of oppression. Abontika and Angkon committed suicide due to sexual harassment. Now another student has complained of sexual harassment and she is moving from door to door for her security."

Meanwhile, a Cumilla court has sent Jagannath University (JnU) teacher Din Islam, who was relieved from assistant proctor post of the university, to jail after completion of his one-day remand in a case over the death of Law Department student Fairuz Abontika by suicide.

Judge of Cumilla Chief Judicial Magistrate Court Abu Bakar Siddique passed the order as he was produced before the court after remand on Tuesday.

A court on Monday placed Jagannath University's suspended student Raihan Siddique Amman and teacher Din Islam on a two and one-day remand respectively in the case.

The court also ordered the investigation officer of the case filed to submit a report within seven days.

Abontika, a student of the 2017-18 academic year of the JnU Law Department, hanged herself at her Cumilla residence after accusing her classmate Amman and relieved assistant proctor Din Islam in a Facebook post of the suicide incident around 10 pm on Friday.
