FE REPORT
The members of Safe Road Movement (SRM) organised on Friday a procession in the city commemorating Rajeev and Dia, the two students of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment College who were killed by a reckless bus four years back.
From the procession, they called for effective steps from the authorities concerned to stop the perennial surge in road accidents across the country.
The procession started around 10:30 am on Friday from under the Padachari Setu of Khilkhet bus stand ended in Kurmitola area adjacent to MES bus stand.
Shahidul Islam, Central Joint Convener of Safe Road Movement (NISA), said, 'In 2018, we started the movement with 9-point demand. Four years have elapsed since then. Our demands have not been implemented yet. None of the clauses have been met yet."
He said during the student movement, cabinet members, politicians and law enforcement agency officials said children have opened their eyes and awakened their conscience.
He said all the authorities concerned gave various assurances to make the roads safe and free from chaos.
"With the assurances, the students went back to classes. However, accidents are taking place on the roads as usual. Deaths on roads are increasing day by day. So, we have to take to the streets again and again," he mentioned.
It may be mentioned that on July 29, 2018, students of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment College Rajeev and Dia were killed by a bus on the footpath.
