Rana plaza tragedy: Rescuer Yusuf fighting for normal life

Yusuf Ali Sardar (45), a rescue worker of Rana plaza building collapse has been fighting for normal life on the bed of the Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed (CRP) at Savar since May 25, 2013.

He is yet to return to normal life as different parts of his body are not functioning properly, doctors of the CRP confirmed it to this correspondent.

Yusuf Ali, one of the heroes in Rana Plaza rescue operation came to one of his relative's house in Dhaka on April 21, 2013 from Rajbari.

Incidentally his relative used to work in a garment unit at Rajjak Plaza opposite to Rana plaza.

On April 24 after hearing the information of the Rana Plaza collapse Yusuf Ali rushed to the spot and joined other people in the rescue work.

After rescuing several dead bodies when he tried to rescue a woman a pillar of the collapsed building fell on him and he got stuck in the garbage. Allaudin Mia who is looking after Yousuf Ali narrated this.

Dr. Mostafa Kamal, head of nursing department of CRP said, "After his admission to CRP we found him in a critical condition. He got injured in the spinal cord. For this reason he has lost the power of all parts of his body."

Recalling his previous experience he said patients with spinal cord damage cannot move normally. So Yousuf has to be confined in wheel chair.

He also said, "We are trying our level best to give him better treatment so that he can move as soon as possible."

Asked about his release from the CRP, he said that they are hopeful to release him very soon.

Shamoli Aktar, daughter of Yousuf Ali said, "We are passing hard days as my father was the lone earning member of our 7 -man family."

Shamoli also said, "After the incident at first my fathers was admitted to the Apollo Hospital where he stayed for about 28 days. Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) bore all treatment costs but after his transfer to the CRP we are not getting any support from the BGMEA."

Rana Plaza, an eight-storey commercial building, collapsed in Savar, Dhaka on April 24, 2013  killing 1,129 people.
