'Rapist' with bullet wound nabbed

LALMONIRHAT, June 02 (UNB): Hours after he reportedly raped a minor girl, police shot and arrested a young man at Durakuthi in Sadar upazila early Saturday.

The arrestee is Sujon Mia (25), son of Saidul Islam of Taluk Khutamar in the district town.

Police said Saidul took the eight-year-old girl to a bush behind the district court on Friday afternoon while she along with her mother was waiting for a bus to return to their village in Hatibandha upazila, and raped her there.

Failing to find her daughter, the victim's mother approached Sadar thana.

Later, police launched a drive and rescued the girl from the bush and took her to Sadar Hospital but failed to arrest the alleged rapist as he fled.

A team of police conducted a drive at Durakuthi around 1:45 am on Saturday to arrest Saidul, said officer-in-charge (OC) of the thana Mahfuz Alam.
