As many as 34 female students submitted nomination papers for executive posts of Rajshahi University Central Students' Union (RUCSU) election, marking the highest number of women's participation in 15 elections, 14 of which, according to available information, were held during 1964 to 1989.
Among them are independent contenders as well as nominees from Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and Islami Chhatra Shibir. Observers note that such a surge in women's participation in RUCSU elections reflects their growing leadership role in campus politics.
Tasin Khan (2020-21 session) is the lone female contestant for the vice president post, while also running for a Senate seat. For the general secretary position, candidates include Paroma Parmita (2018-19), Nusrat Jahan Nupur (2019-20), Asiya Khatun (2019-20), and Afrin Jahan (2018-19).
Students say the unprecedented presence of women candidates this year not only adds diversity to the competition but also strengthens women's leadership and policy-making roles in campus politics.
GS candidate Nusrat Jahan Nupur said, "RUCSU is a democratic platform for the welfare of all students. I am running to ensure proper representation and to make the campus a safe, peaceful, and student-friendly environment."
VP candidate Tasin Khan said, "Despite repeated discussions with the Election Commission about forming a cyber team, no effective action has been taken. Though the administration formed a five-member team, their activities remain unclear, which has discouraged women's participation. This is disappointing," she said.
