Now relief materials will also be distributed through VGF cards apart from food, Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed said Wednesday, as the government is giving the relief-distribution mechanisms an institutional shape, reports UNB.
The caretaker government has launched a 2.6 million special VGF card programme for feeding as many cyclone-affected people in the country's south and southwestern region for four months--from December to March.
Receiving more assistance for the victims, Dr Fakhruddin said, "The relief operation in the cyclone 'Sidr'-hit areas is going on in a coordinated manner and it is getting institutionalized."
The Chief Adviser received donations for CA's Relief and Welfare Fund from organizations and institutions at his office today, as of previous days.
He said Bangladesh Bank has arranged a Tk 300-crore soft-loan project, along with banks concerned, for helping the cyclone-affected people resume their economic activities.
The government has also sanctioned another Tk 1.30 billion loan that will be distributed by various NGOs among small traders, fishermen, poultry and cattle farmers.
The Chief Adviser thanked the donors, particularly students who donated money to the fund by saving their school tiffin money to help out the people in distress.
Those who handed over cheques today to the Chief Adviser included Primary and Mass Education, Holy Cross College and Holy Cross College Alumni Association, Govern-ment Horogonga College, International Islamic University Chittagong Trust, Bangladesh Women's Association, American Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Bangladesh, Institu-tion of Engineers Bangladesh, Rajshahi Centre, Social Invest-ment Bank, Junior Chamber International Bangladesh, Uttso Ramna Park and Dhanmondi Ladies' Club.
