The country's inflow of remittances through unauthorised channel is more than double that of official one, said Member of Parliament (MP) Israfil Alam Monday.
He said the impact of labour migration on the economy of Bangladesh is very high. Labour migration contributes more than 13 per cent to the country's gross domestic product (GDP).
He was speaking at a seminar on 'Labour Attaches: The Protectors of Female Migrants in the Middle East' organised by Refugee and Migratory Movements Research Unit (RMMRU) in the city.
Mr Alam, a member of the standing committee on labour and employment and the ministry of expatriates welfare and overseas employment of the parliament, also stressed the need for raising voice for ensuring proper salary for Bangladeshi workers abroad.
Citing an example he said, "A Bangladeshi worker gets only US$ 200 but workers of Nepal or other labour sending countries receive $ 500 each for the same work".
The parliament member also said a comprehensive agreement is very necessary for sending workers abroad. For protection of women workers it is necessary to improve the quality of labour attaches in the Middle Eastern countries, he added.
Founding chair of RMMRU Tasnim Siddique said the government should set up a shelter home in every embassy for protection of women migrants.
Chief of mission of International Organisation for Migration (IOM) Sarat Dash, Executive Director (ED) of Transparency International, Bangladesh (TIB) Dr Iftekharuzzaman, ED of Manusher Janno Foundation Shaheen Anam, among others, were present at the programme.
