A legal notice has been sent to government bodies concerned asking them to remove iron cages from all courtrooms of the lower judiciary across the country within four weeks.
Supreme Court lawyer Mohammad Shishir Manir, on behalf of 10 other SC lawyers, served the notice on law secretary, home secretary and police chief on Sunday.
An iron cage inside a courtroom is a place where an accused stands during any case proceedings.
According to the notice, the use of iron cages in the courtrooms is inhumane and degrading, and it is contradictory to the law and constitution.
If the notice recipients do not take measures within four weeks to this end, a writ petition will be filed with the High Court for the same, it reads.
"A review of domestic and international laws and regulations and High Court precedents shows that the use of iron cages in courtrooms is inhumane," cited the notice.
"This is also contradictory to the international regulations, including article 35(5) of the Constitution of Bangladesh."
It is, therefore, absolutely necessary to remove iron cages from courtrooms to uphold the natural dignity of human beings and ensure protection of fundamental rights, the notice concluded.
