WEEKLY KITCHEN MARKET

Rice becomes costlier even at peak Boro season

Eggs and vegetables get slightly cheaper

FE REPORT | June 20, 2026 12:00:00

Rice prices started rising again from last week after remaining largely stable for nearly one and a half months, despite the ongoing peak harvesting season of Boro paddy.

However, prices of eggs and most vegetables have declined slightly, offering consumers some relief amid persistently high living costs.

Freshly harvested Boro paddy has already reached markets across the country.

After harvesting began in mid-April, rice prices had shown a modest decline in local markets. But that relief proved short-lived, as prices started climbing again within a month, according to market sources.

Over the past week, retail prices of all varieties of rice in Dhaka increased by Tk 3.0-5.0 per kg.

Retailers said fine-quality rice, whose price had fallen by Tk 3.0-5.0 per kg to Tk 75-90 a few weeks ago, is now selling at around Tk 80-95 per kg. The sharpest increase has been recorded in medium and coarse rice.

According to data from the state-run Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB), prices of medium-quality rice have increased by 2.5 per cent, while coarse rice prices have risen by as much as 3.7 per cent in a week.

Coarse rice, whose price which had dropped to Tk 50-52 per kg, is now selling at Tk 55-57 per kg in the retail market.

Ajgar Ali, a grocery shop owner on Sher-e-Bangla Road in Mohammadpur, said wholesale rice prices had been increasing for some time, forcing retailers to charge more.

Rafiqul Alam, a rice trader at Mohammadpur Krishi Market, said rice supply had been somewhat disrupted during Eid-ul-Azha due to transportation constraints, although the situation has now normalised.

"However, higher transport costs resulting from increased fuel prices have also contributed to the rise in rice prices," he said.

Vegetable prices, which usually remain elevated at this time of year, are currently relatively stable.

Long brinjal and bitter gourd are selling for Tk 75-80 per kg while okra is available at Tk 60-65 per kg.

Eddo, round brinjal, yardlong bean, sponge gourd and ridge gourd are selling between Tk 70 and Tk 100 per kg, while snake gourd is priced at Tk 60-70 per kg. Pointed gourd and cucumber are available at Tk 50-80 per kg based on quality.

Prices of potatoes and onions remained unchanged, with onions selling at Tk 40-50 per kg and potatoes at Tk 25-30 per kg.

Broiler chicken prices have declined further by Tk 10 a kg and are now selling at Tk 160-170 per kg.

Farm egg prices have also fallen. A dozen eggs, which sold for Tk 130-140 about a week ago, are now available at Tk 125-135.

Meanwhile, prices of red meat, fish, sugar, lentils and other essential commodities remained largely unchanged at their previous high levels.
