CHUADANGA, Sept 1 (UNB): The rice and paddy procurement drive in the district has failed to achieve the target this season, as its price is higher than the government rate in the local market.
The procurement drive across the country started on May 1 and continued till August 31 this year. But the purchasing centres could not collect even half of the target in the district.
Official sources said the government decided to buy 7,870 tonnes of rice and 2,107 tonnes of paddy from the district but the procurement centres could buy only 3,682 tonnes rice and seven tonnes paddy from the district until August 30.
The officials said they procured the seven tonnes paddy only from Darshana Upazila and they failed to buy a single maund of paddy from the other upazilas of the district.
Millers and farmers are showing reluctance in selling rice and paddy to the government procurement centres as they are getting high price from the local markets.
A local source said per kg rice is being sold between Tk 23 and Tk 25 while paddy between Tk 13 and Tk 14 at the local markets where the government rate of per kg rice is Tk 18 and that of paddy is Tk 11.25.
