Rights activists for passing law ensuring welfare, protection of elderlies

Rights activists have demanded to pass a law ensuring the welfare and social protection of elderly citizens of the country.
The demand was made at a webinar organised by Prabin Odhikar Mancha, Bangladesh, in the city on Sunday in observance of the International Day for Older Persons 2020.
October 1 is observed as International Day for Older Persons across the globe and this year, the day was observed with the pledge to have better world for the elderly people.
Prabin Odhikar Mancha chairman Kazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad chaired the webinar while state minister of social welfare ministry, Md Ashraf Ali Khan Khasru, addressed the event as the chief guest.
The speakers said, currently nine to eight per cent of the total population of Bangladesh is considered to be elderly people and the numbers of elderly persons are rising with the country's average life expectancy.
The government has taken a number of initiatives for the elderlies, state minister Khasru said.
