Rights group deplores poor law and order

Some 520 people were killed in violence and road accidents across the country last month, according to a report of Bangladesh Society for the Enforcement of Human Rights (BSEHR), reports UNB.
Abul Basar, executive director of the group, revealed the report at a press briefing in the city Sunday.
The findings were based on newspaper reports and internal surveys conducted from May 1 to 30 at municipality, upazila and district levels. The report gave a break-up of the deaths.
At least 112 people died in road accidents, 10 in social violence, 35 people in political violence, 79 in secret incidents, 76 by miscreants, 43 in mysterious incidents, 53 by torture, 16 in family violence, 10 in hospitals due to alleged negligence of duty, nine in mob-attacks and eight in 'shootout'.
One of the victims was journalist, said the report.
Thirty-three people remained missing after abduction.
The report said 15 children and 17 women were raped and seven of the victims were killed. Besides, 14 women and girls suffered sexual harassment, the report added.
Abul Bashar voiced disappointment about the deteriorating law and order situation. He said abductions are growing because of weak rule of law.
