FE Report | April 06, 2020 00:00:00

Social Action Committee, a rights group, on Sunday expressed grave concern and worry about the intensified incidents of violence against women in the country especially in the capital Dhaka during the coronavirus pandemic.

A total of 28 incidents of violence, including rape, violence for dowry, sexual harassment and kidnap took place in the city in 10 days between March 26 and April 04, it said in a press statement.

Social Action Committee, a platform of some 66 individual women rights, legal rights and development organisations, urged the authorities concerned to take immediate measures to ensure safety of women and girls across the country during this ongoing nationwide shutdown,

Nine cases were filed with police stations against rape incidents, six were filed for sexual violence, five were for kidnap related cases and eight were filed against dowry related violence, the press statement added.

More safety and security are needed for women and girls as victims at this time find it difficult to contact with law enforcement agencies due to the shutdown, it added in the statement signed by Dr Fauzia Moslem, acting president of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad.

Incidents of violence have sharply increased during the shutdown, the statement mentioned adding on average two to four women and girls visited the One-stop Crisis Centre (OCC) after being victims of different types of violence including rape and sexual violence till April 04.
