Ringleader of human trafficking held

COX'S BAZAR, Dec 9 (UNB): Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in a drive Tuesday arrested the ringleader of a human trafficking cartel along with his wife in Teknaf Upazila in the district.

The arrestees were identified as Shaker Miah alias Shaker Majhi (35), son of Kabir Ahmed of Sabrang Mundardeil village, and his wife Jaheda Begum (19).

Acting on a tip-off, a BGB team raided the house of Shaker around 4:00 am and arrested him, said commanding officer of BGB battalion-42 Lt Col Abu Jar Al Jahid.

During the drive, the paramilitary force also detained his wife Jaheda, he said, adding that a locally made firearm and illegally imported beer cans were also recovered from the house.

Shaker used to traffic innocent people to various countries through sea and he is accused in several cases filed against him, said Jahid.

Meanwhile, members of the BGB Battalion-42 in another drive recovered 34,000 Yaba tablets worth Tk 12.0 million from the Sabrang Lafargun area around 10:00 am.
