River erosion takes serious turn

BARISAL, July 16 (UNB): Erosion of various rivers of the district has taken a serious turn with the advent of the monsoon, endangering lives and properties of thousands of people.
Sources said the erosion of Kirtonkhola, Sandhya, Sugandhya, Arial Kha and Meghna rivers have become severe during the last few days.
They said more than 50 families have lost their houses, land properties by the erosion of Sugandhya in Khudrakati and Rajguru villages under Babuganj Upazila in last few days.
The rivers Sandhya and Arial Kha have also washed away vast areas of Chandpasha, Dehergati, Rahamatpur, Baherchar and Agorpur unions under Babuganj Upazila.
Erosion of these rivers at Lohalia, Mirganj, Manikati, Khudrakati, Rajguru, Mahishadi, Doarika, Rakudia, Kedarpur, Sanidurpur, Vuterdia, Ramjankati points are more severe.
Important establishments and structures like Doarika bridge, Abul Kalam College, Bir Shrestho Mohiuddin Jahangir Museum, Char Shadhukati Madrasah are under threat of erosion.
