River erosion takes serious turn in Kurigram

KURIGRAM, July 30 (UNB): With the recession of the river water in the district the river erosion has taken a serious turn devouring some 130 dwelling houses and educational institutions during the last few days.

The erosion of the coastline by rivers Brahmaputra, Tista, Dharala and Dhudkumor continued for the last few days forcing a good number of people to take shelter in safer places, including embankments.

During a visit to different worst affected areas including Bidyananda union in Razarhat Upazila, Begamganj union in Ulipur Upazila, Astamari union in Chilmari Upazila this corresponded found that the homeless people were passing days in great hardships due to lack of government and non-government assistance.

The erosion-hit victims expressed their anger that they were not

getting any kind of assistance from the government or even from any NGOs so far. They urged the government and NGOs to stand beside them to ease their sufferings.

They also urged the authorities concerned to take necessary steps to halt river erosion on an emergency basis.

A good number of dwelling houses, schools, madrasahs, religious institutions and roads and property worth hundreds of millions of taka have also become vulnerable due to the erosion.
