Road accidents kill 468 in May

At least 468 people were killed and 769 people were injured in some 496 road accidents in the outgoing month of May, according to a passenger rights organization on Wednesday.

At the same time, 43 people were killed and 7 people were injured in 50 railway accidents.

16 passengers were killed, 08 others injured and 3 were missing in 18 accidents on waterways, it added.

In total, 527 people were killed and 779 people were injured in a total of 564 accidents on roads, railways and waterways, said the report prepared by the Passenger Welfare Association of Bangladesh.

During this period, 181 people were killed and 114 people were injured in 185 motorcycle accidents which are 37.29 per cent of the total accidents, 38.67 per cent of the dead and 14.82 per cent of the injured.

Analysis of road accident types showed that 26.81 per cent of the total accidents this month occurred on national highways, 35.88 per cent on regional highways, and 30.04 per cent on feeder roads.

In this month, the most road accidents occurred in Dhaka division with 121 road accidents in which 110 people were killed and 151 injured. Sylhet division watched the least road accidents in which 28 people were killed and 62 were injured in 24 road accidents, it read.

This information has emerged in the monitoring report of the Accident Monitoring Cell of the association.

This report has been prepared by monitoring the news of road, rail and maritime accidents published in the national, regional and online newspapers of the country.

687 vehicles involved in road accidents have been identified. It showed that 28.09 per cent are motorcycles, 24.16 per cent are trucks-pickup-covered vans and Lorries. 56.25 per cent of the total accidents occurred when vehicles run on people on the streets.

According to the observations of Bangladesh Passenger Welfare Association, the significant causes of road accidents in May are-- carrying excess passengers in risky vehicles and carelessness of passengers, free movement of motorcycles and reckless speed on the roads and highways, massive growth in battery powered and engine powered three wheelers.

No road signs or road markings on national highways, no lights on roads, defects in highway construction, vehicle defects, tendency to disobey traffic laws are also causes, it found.
