Road crashes claim 512 lives last month


As many as 512 people were killed and 793 others injured in road accidents across the country last December.
Fifty-nine women and 64 children were among the total deceased.
A total of 517 road accidents took place last month, causing the casualties, the Road Safety Foundation (RSF) said in a report on Thursday.
Some 213 motorcycle accidents occurred during the period, claiming 201 lives -- which is 39.25 per cent of the total deaths.
Besides, nine boats met with accidents, which left 17 dead, 14 injured and 11 missing.
Some 31 people lost life and 23 others suffered injuries as 26 railway accidents also occurred last month, the report says.
Of the total deceased in the road crashes, 114 were pedestrians, which is 22.26 per cent of the total fatalities.
Fifty-six drivers of vehicles and their assistants lost life in the accidents, it added.
The RSF has prepared the report based on data from nine national dailies, seven online news portals and electronic media.
According to the RSF data, 162 (31.33 per cent) accidents occurred on national highways, 238 (46.03 per cent) on regional roads and 77 (14.89 per cent) on rural roads.
Among the vehicles met with the accidents, passenger buses accounted for 10.07 per cent. The number of such vehicles was 834.
Dhaka division witnessed most of the accidents and fatalities, the report said, adding that 118 people died in 123 accidents.
Some 30 people lost lives in 29 accidents in Sylhet division.
The RSF further says the capital witnessed 27 road accidents which left 21 dead and 36 injured.
