Road crashes killed 475, hurt 605 in Nov

Reveals JKS report

There took place a total of 566 road accidents in the country in the month of November, resulting in at least 475 deaths and 605 injuries, according to a report from Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity (JKS).

Additionally, there occurred 31 railway accidents, causing 23 fatalities and 25 injuries.

Six waterway accidents caused deaths of five people and left one person missing, as reported by the Passenger Welfare Association of Bangladesh.

A total 503 people were killed and 630 others injured in 603 accidents on roads, railways and waterways.

Of these accidents, motorcycle accidents accounted for 147 cases, in which 173 people were killed and 85 injured.

This represents approximately 26 per cent of the total accidents.

The report was prepared by the accident monitoring cell of the association by studying news reports on road, rail and waterway accidents published in the national, regional and online newspapers of the country.

Dhaka division witnessed highest 183 road accidents with 115 fatalities and 138 injuries while Sylhet division witnessed the lowest 22 road accidents with 16 deaths.

40.81 per cent of the total accidents occurred as pedestrians were run over by vehicles.

Of the accidents, 42.57 per cent occurred on national highways, 19.74 on regional roads and 21.55 per cent on roads.

Besides, 13.04 per cent accidents occurred in Dhaka city, 2.65 in Chattogram city and 0.35 per cent on rail tracks, it added.

According to the observations of the association, the significant causes of road accidents in the month of October included misapplication of traffic laws, weak enforcement of traffic regulations, irregularities and corruption in the traffic department, massive increase in motorcycles, battery-powered rickshaws, and three-wheelers and free movement of these vehicles on highways.
