Road mishaps in last 15 years claimed over 45,000 lives: Minister

Road accidents in the last 15 years have killed over 45,000 people in Bangladesh, according to Road Transport Minister Obaidul Quader, report agencies.
Replying to a query in Parliament on Tuesday, he said 55,316 incidents of road accidents happened across the country between 2000 and 2015.
"A total of 45, 495 people died and 38,770 were injured in those accidents," Quader said, adding the figures had been provided by the police.
Replying to another query, he said that 106 bridges had been built and repaired during the 2014-15 fiscal at a cost of Tk 1.04 billion.
According to the minister, the procurement process was on for the acquisition of 300 double-decker buses, 100 articulated buses and 500 trucks for the state- owned Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC).
Meanwhile, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said on Monday the government has a plan to import new vehicles.
The state-run Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) is giving service to passengers and carrying goods across the country with 1,670 buses and trucks," he said this while replying to a tabled question from treasury bench member Begum Wasika Ayesha Khan in the House.
The minister said that there are 1,670 vehicles at this moment in the BRTC fleet, of which, 1,532 are buses and 138 trucks.
Mr Quader informed the House that the government has a plan of importing new vehicles. An initiative of procuring 300 double-decker buses, 100 articulated buses and 500 trucks is underway, he added.
Replying to another question from treasury bench member M Abdul Latif, the minister said currently 158 motor vehicles of the BRTC are out of order.
