RU students demand revision of quota system in govt jobs

RAJSHAHI UNIVERSITY, Feb 19 (UNB): Several hundred students of the Rajshahi University (RU) staged a demonstration on Monday on the campus demanding revision of the quota system in government jobs.
Students under the banner "General Students" formed a human chain in front of the university central library to press their six-point demand.
Their demands are-fixation of 10pc quota instead of existing 56pc, recruiting candidates on merit basis in the vacant posts if enough candidates are not found against quota, cancelling the quota facility for more than one job, cancelling special recruitment test for quota candidates and fixing an indifferent age-limit for all in the job field.
Addressing the rally, the agitating students said there should be equality of opportunity for all citizens in respect of employment or office in the service of the Republic as per the constitution.
Due to the current quota system, many meritorious students are not getting jobs, causing an increase in unemployment. The merits of the students are not being evaluated because of the split share quotas, they alleged.
They also announced to hold the same programme today (Tuesday) at the same venue.
