Speakers at a function in Rangpur Monday said that adequate sanitation facilities and supply of safe drinking water for all are must for creating a good environment and making a healthy nation, reports BSS.
For this, they underscored the need for creating mass awareness involving the common people including the women- folk at the grassroots levels to achieve the ultimate goals through ensuring basic needs of safe drinking water and sanitation for all.
They were speaking at the inaugural function of the two-day Watsan Fair jointly organised by ASOD and Department of Public Health and Engineering (DPHE) with the assistances of the UNICEF at Tampat union under Sadar Upazila.
The fair is being organised with a view to involving the rural people including women at larger scale to create mass awareness on pure drinking water and environmental sanitation through promoting hygienic conditions in rural areas.
Some 25 stalls were installed by different NGOs, local public bodies and service providing organisations displaying various sanitation and safe- drinking water materials and other things to create awareness on the issues.
Several other stalls have also been set up by different NGOs and private entrepreneurs displaying various homemade handicraft products, a blood donation camp has been set up and free treatments of teeth and eye diseases are also being provided.
Hundreds of common people of all ages, farmers, students, teachers, adolescents, Ansar-VDP members, women community leaders and public representatives, day- and farm-labourers attended the inaugural ceremony.
Chaired by Supervisor of ASOD Monira Sultana Lisa, Tampat union chairman Hassan Ali Mian attended the inaugural ceremony as the chief guest and programme coordinator of ASOD Shariful Hossain Himel was present as the special guest.
Besides, ASOD executives, local public representatives, professionals, community leaders, elite and DPHE officials addressed.
