Senior Indian diplomat Sandeep Chakravorty, currently the country's ambassador to Indonesia, is expected to be appointed as the next high commissioner (HC) to Bangladesh, Indian media report.
The move comes as New Delhi seeks to recalibrate ties with Dhaka following a period of strained bilateral relations, according to Hindustan Times.
Chakravorty, a 1996-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, previously served as deputy chief of mission in Bangladesh between 2012 and 2015, reports bdnews24.com.
Hindustan Times reports that he was on a shortlist of diplomats considered for the Dhaka posting late last year.
He has been serving as ambassador to Indonesia since August 2023 and has been involved in strengthening cooperation with Jakarta in areas including trade and defence.
India's current High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pranay Verma is expected to remain in the post for several more weeks as the new BNP-led government settles in following its sweeping victory in the Feb 12 parliamentary election, according to the report.
The intervening period will allow time for completion of formal procedures for Chakravorty's appointment, including finalisation of the agrément -- the host country's formal approval for the appointment of a diplomatic envoy.
