SC extends bail to militant-suspect

The Supreme Court  (SC) has extended until December 31 the stay on the interim bail that had been granted earlier to Asif Adnan, a suspect member of militant outfit Ansarullah Bangla Team, by the High Court on November 10, reports UNB.

The full-bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain, passed the order on Sunday upon the government's appeal challenging the HC order that had granted a four-week interim bail to Asif Adnan, son of former HC judge Abdus Salam Mamun.

Barrister Rokanuddin Mahmud appeared for the accused while Additional Attorney General (AAG) Momtaj Uddin Fakir and Deputy Attorney General (DAG) Amit Talukder represented the state during the hearing on the day.

On November 10, a HC bench of Justice Nizamul Haque Nasim and Justice SH Md Nurul Huda granted the four-week interim bail to Asif in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act 2009 and also ordered the government to explain within four weeks why the accused should not be granted a permanent bail.

Later, Chamber Judge of the Supreme Court Hassan Faiz Siddiqui stayed the bail following the government's appeal against the HC order.

On November 13, a four-member Appellate Division bench, headed by Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain, stayed the bail until the hearing Sunday on the government's appeal against the HC order.

Asif, 26, along with another youth was arrested by the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police from the capital in September.
