JAYPURHAT, Mar 05: Textbook crisis of the secondary level in Jaypurhat is hampering education for students.
High school level books are not available in the market even after 2 months have passed of academic year. All classes are suffering due to the unavailability of textbooks.
Students, guardians and teachers including book sellers are anxious about the matter. Students and guardians said that book sellers were creating the crisis for getting more profit. They also alleged that some of book sellers were charging higher than the fixed price of NCTB or the price printed on the book.
Finding no other alternative some guardians are buying notebooks as classes in the schools have already started.
Many booksellers of five upazilas and Jaypurhat town said that some Bengali, English, Mathematics, General science and sociology textbooks of high school level were available but textbooks on religion, grammar and others were not available in the market. They said that books of first and second printing had already been sold out but those were inadequate.
Masrekul Alam owner of the Master library in Pauro market of the town said, they usually received less number of books than their demand. He added that they were charging higher prices for the books because they had bought the books at higher rates due to their unavailability.
Same idea expressed other owners of book shop in the market. Shahidul Islam a guardian alleged that some of the book sellers compelled them to buy notebooks with the board books.
Although all booksellers in the market denied the allegations but they admitted that some guardians and students agree to buy the notebooks because they were unable to get the textbooks.
