Selim Al Deen\\\'s birth anniversary festival begins

A two-day birth anniversary festival of the famous playwright Selim Al Deen began on the Jahangirnagar University (JU) campus on Monday.

The department of Drama and Dramatics of JU arranged the series programmes to celebrate the 65th birth anniversary of its founding chairman Selim Al Deen.

About 10:00am, students and teachers of the department brought out a procession inaugurated by the JU Vice Chancellor Prof Farzana Islam from the Old Arts building.

President of Combined Cultural Alliance Nasir Uddin Usuf Bacchu, JU registrar Abu Bakr Siddique and chairperson of the Drama and Dramatics department Prof Khaeruzzaman Mitu participated in the procession, among others.

Parading through the main streets of the campus, the procession ended at the graveyard of Selim Al Deen beside the central mosque amid placing floral wreaths.

After placing floral wreath, the JU VC said, "The life of mass people has been reflected in the play of the Selim Al Deen. He created a social movement through drama."

"Selim Al Deen has taken the drama upto the root level by establishing 'Gram Theatre'", she added.

Different cultural organisations including Bangladesh Gram Theatre, Dhaka Theatre, Swapno Dal, Desh Bangla Natta Dal, Selim Al Deen Foundation, Bunon Theatre, Taluknagar Theatre and JU TSC also placed floral wreaths.
