Seven people arrested for cutting hills in Sylhet

SYLHET, June 22 (UNB): As part of the ongoing drive against hill cutting, local administration arrested seven people on charge of hill cutting in the city and Golapganj Upazila Wednesday.
The deputy commissioner and local UNO arrested two people at Dattarail in Golapganj Upazila for hill cutting. They were identified as Abdul Hamid and Nuru Miah.
In another drive, police arrested two people - Sirajuddin and Abdul Mukit from Barkut area of the upazila on the same day.
Three people - Sajal Jalak and Pritom - were arrested while cutting hill at Akhalia Hawladerpara in the city.
Cases were filed against the arrested people under the Environment Act.
After the Chittagong tragedy and several cracks found on the hills of that district, district administration here instructed all its UNOs to take legal action against the people involved in hill cutting that may cause another disastrous natural calamity.
Sylhet City Corporation has also issued alert notice for the people, living on the slopes.
Local people alleged that a number of housing projects are being implemented here after cutting hills in different areas including Akhalia, Baluchar, Majortila, Khadimnagar, Dholdhal, Zakaria City, Shahporan, Osmani Airport area, Tarapur, Duski, Kalibari, Jugipara, Bagbari, Borobari, Tilagaon, Borogul, Dalia, Nalia, Kucharpara, Korerpara, Alurtol, Khadimpara in the city and other places in Golapganj, Dakkhin Surma and Jointapur upazilas.
