The flood situation has taken a turn for the worse in Sylhet and Sunamganj districts, said State Minister for Disaster and Relief Dr Md Enamur Rahman on Saturday.
"Among the flood-hit areas in the country, the flood situation in Sylhet and Sunamganj districts has worsened sharply," he told the media at his secretariat office after reviewing the overall flood situation in the country.
He said the severity of floods in Sylhet and Sunamganj has surpassed all records in the past 122 years.
At the directives of the Prime Minister, he said, the officials concerned of different government departments/ agencies including armed forces personnel are working relentlessly to rescue the flood victims in Sylhet and Sunamganj districts and other areas.
The state minister said the flood situation has turned grim since Thursday last while floodwater inundated all low-lying areas in Sylhet city along with other areas of the district and Sunamganj.
The first spell of flood hit Sylhet on May 15 last, he said, adding that the new phase of floods started in Sylhet from June 15 due to onrush of upstream water coupled with heavy monsoon rains. He also called upon socio-cultural organisations of the country to come forward and help flood-affected people.
Hundreds of thousands of people in the two districts who have been marooned by floodwater are going through a tough time with scarcity of basic needs.
Sunamganj town is now under floodwater and the people of the town have no scope to take refuge in shelter centres. Ongoing floods hit all the 12 upazilas in Sunamganj, according to the ministry.
