Shrimps worth Tk several crore washed away following collapse of embankment

SATKHIRA, Sept 28 (UNB): Shrimps worth several crore takas were washed away when an embankment of Power Development Board (PDB) along the river Kapotakkhya collapsed at Nakna point in Ashashuni Upazila early Friday.
Sources said around 100 feet area of the embankment collapsed at about 2.00 am due to pressure by high tide in the river and washed away shrimp in 1,000 bighas of land.
The people in seven villages under Protapnagar union of the Upazila remained marooned following the collapse of the embankment.
Ashashuni Upazila Nirbahi Officer Ananda Kumar Biswas said local people have been trying hard to repair the embankment voluntarily.
Meanwhile in Khulna, two cross dams developed cracks at Dakop and Koira Upazilas due to strong current of Shibsha and Kobadak rivers causing inundation of vast low lying areas on Thursday.
Local administration sources said a cross dam at Kamarkhali and Sutarkhalai unions in Dakop Upazila developed cracks due to strong current of Shibsha river at about 10am Wednesday.
Several hundred shrimp enclosures and standing crops were flooded as river water entered into the area through the breaches in the cross dam. Many affected people took shelter to safer places.
Local people on voluntary basis started repairing the cross dam since morning.
