Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC) temporarily cancelled Thursday the registration of Shafiul Azam, a doctor of the Sikder Medical College and Hospital, on charge of cheating people and misbehaviour, said a release issued by BMDC.

BMDC Registrar Dr ZH Bashunia confirmed the news, three days after the BMDC executive committee took the decision on Monday. This will be the second instance of cancellation of registration of any doctor in the country. The BMDC and the health ministry had formed separate committees to investigate the incident.

On May 13, Shishir Morol, special correspondent of the Prothom Alo, went to the ZA Sikder Women's Medical College and Hospital to report on an allegation against Shafiul Azam. Shafiul and his associates attacked Morol and confined him in a room for two and a half hours. They beat him up severely.

Shafiul, an assistant professor at the Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH), had been working full-time at the ZA Sikder Women's Medical College Hospital without taking leave from the CMCH. The BMDC investigation found all the  allegations against the doctor true.
