Six killed, 79 injured in road crashes in Comilla, Gazipur

COMILLA, Sept 16 (UNB): Four people, including an engineer and a college teacher, were killed and 50 others injured in a head-on collision between two buses at Korpai in Burichang Upazila Sunday morning.
Three of the deceased were identified as Mujibur Rahman (55), an engineer of Chandina Public Health Engineering Department, Bilkis Akther, a teacher of Chandina Redawn Ahmed Degree College and Abdul Qadir.
Police said the accident occurred at about 9:30 am on Dhaka-Chittagong Highway when the Feni bound bus from Dhaka collided with the Daudkandi bound bus from Comilla, killing Mujibur Rahman and an unidentified person on the spot.
Bilkis Akther and Abdul Qadir succumbed to their injuries at Comilla Medical College Hospital at noon.
The injured were admitted to local health complex and different clinics.
Meanwhile, in Gazipur, two people, including a schoolboy, were killed and nine others injured as a bus rammed into a school-van at Memberbari on Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway Sunday morning.
Police said the Dhaka bound bus from Sreepur Upazila hit the school-van of Ababil Academy from behind, killing van driver Afajuddin (27) on the spot and injuring 10 students of the school at about 7:45 am.
Of the injured, five were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) but Mehedi Hasan Apu (9), student of KG-1, died on way to the hospital.
Traffic on Dhaka-Mymensingh Road remained suspended for about an hour following the accident.
In another accident, at least 20 people, mostly garment workers, were injured as a bus dashed a tree when its driver lost control over the steering at Porabari in Sadar Upazila Sunday.
Of the injured, 15 were admitted to Sadar Hospital.
