The government is going to introduce smart classrooms in schools as traditional classrooms are considered not-so-suitable for meeting the needs of the present day teaching method.

The education ministry has initiated a project in this regard and sought Chinese grant funding, highly placed sources have said, praising that the Chinese technology in smart classrooms is more friendly and effective.

"The Chinese embassy in Bangladesh has recently provided five smart class rooms at Chandpur Puranbazar Degree College in Chandpur District, creating positive attention on smart classrooms to the Ministry of Education," said an official.

The project aims to establish 300 smart class rooms initially in selected secondary schools on a pilot basis. The "smart classroom" focuses on smart teaching, smart management, and fully integrates advanced ICT technology.

According to officials, the proposed project is relevant to education sector allocation because the MoE has emphasised on the ICT education in the secondary and higher secondary level and introducing multimedia teaching-learning system for each educational institution of the country under the ministry.

To spread ICT education in the country, the government has introduced digital technology as a compulsory subject in the secondary and higher secondary levels.

For this purpose, the government established around 4,000 ICT labs in the institutions under different projects, officials said.

ICT for Education in Secondary and Higher Secondary Level Project (Phase II) is a highly relevant project with the proposed project.

The multimedia class room is a prior version of smart class room but, at the same time, the smart class room is much more inclusive than multimedia class room.

In recent years, the traditional classrooms are becoming less and less suitable for the needs of current teaching.

More and more schools have begun using multimedia equipment for daily teaching to solve the problems of normal teaching work.

Almost all the secondary schools in Bangladesh have traditional projector-based multimedia classrooms in Bangladesh.

The "smart classroom" focuses on teaching tools to help schools modernise educational content, teaching methods and strengthen the network among teachers, students and parents.

The construction of a teaching resource system is expected to improve the level of information. Bangladesh has made remarkable progress in expanding access to education over the past decade, said an official.

Ninety-eight percent of primary school-age children are enrolled, and Bangladesh has achieved almost universal primary education and gender parity in terms of equal access to education.

"So, it is important for Bangladesh to focus on improving the quality of education that will help individuals acquire the knowledge and skills to meet all the needs of the jobs of today and tomorrow. It is therefore necessary to upgrade our ICT-based education."
