Speakers for equal rights of girl children

Speakers stressed the need for ensuring equal rights for girl children for their empowerment in the country.

Apart from education, the girl children need to be given proper nutrition and other facilities, they also said.

They made the remarks on Tuesday in celebration of 'International Day of the Girl Child 2019'.

Room to Read Bangladesh celebrated the day with the theme 'Girl Force: Unscripted and Unstoppable' at the Bangladesh Shishu Academy in the capital.

Deputy Minister for the Ministry of Education Mohibul Hassan Chowdhury was the chief guest of the event. Dr Syed Md Golam Faruk, director general at the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE), and Lucky Enam, chairperson of Bangladesh Shishu Academy, were also present at the programme, among others.

Rakhi Sarkar, country director of Room to Read Bangladesh, said it is time to ensure concerted efforts from families, educational institutions, communities, public representatives and the state to change the status and position of girls.
