Speakers at a discussion stressed on Monday the need for strict enforcement of law to protect the country's young generation from tobacco and drugs, reports UNB.
"It'll not be possible to control tobacco and drug abuse without strong enforcement of laws," said Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu who attended the discussion as the chief guest.
Manas, an association working for the prevention of drug abuse, arranged the discussion at the Jatiya Press Club with its founder President Prof Dr Arup Ratan Choudhury in the chair.
The information minister said his ministry will launch an awareness campaign through advertisement and screening documentaries depicting harmful effects of tobacco use and drugs.
Law Commission Chairman ABM Khairul Haque said a monitoring committee is needed to oversee whether the 'Smoking and Tobacco Products Usage (Control) (Amendment) Act, 2013' is being enforced properly.
Dr Arup Ratan said, "98 per cent of the drug addicted people are smokers. So, strict enforcement of the Tobacco Control Law will help prevent drug abuse and protect the young generation from all sorts of drugs."
