CHITTAGONG, July 18 : The Special Committee on environment and hill-cutting has started its work and reported to have discussed the existing laws relating to hill-cutting and the environment in its first meeting.
The committee has been formed to make the existing laws time befitting.
Additional Divisional Commissioner (Revenue) of Chittagong MAN Siddique, who is the president of the committee, presided over the meeting held at the local Circuit House.
The committee is examining the different aspects of the hill-cutting act with special emphasis on its weak sides. It is set to make the existing act a time befitting one through necessary reforms, sources said.
Different environment-oriented organisations have been launching movements against hill-cutting in Chittagong since long. But a section of businessmen in collaboration with a section of the officials of administration were involved in the unhealthy trend of hill-cutting in this region.
Following the dreadfull natural disaster of June 11 last, strict measures were taken by the Chief Adviser to the incumbent Caretaker Government instructed the administration to adopt necessary measures to stop hill-cutting. Later Communication Adviser also spelt out similar warnings against hill-cutting in Chittagong in a meeting of the special committee on Relief and Rehabilitation, held at Chittagong Circuit House recently.
Centring around the directives of the Chief Advisor and Communication Advisor, local administration practically stepped in the field to take effective step for resisting hill-cutting in Chittagong.
