CHITTAGONG, April 5: Mount Elizabeth Hospitals Singapore organised a public seminar focusing on the new age state of the art technology to treat orthopaedic and urological diseases in the port city today.

The event titled 'Early Detection and Treatment Options of Orthopaedical and Urological diseases' was addressed by Dr Jeffrey Chew, a leading orthopaedic surgeon and Dr Gerald Tan, a prominent urologist, both from Mount Elizabeth Hospitals Singapore as keynote speakers.

Dr Jeffrey is a pioneer in the field of orthopaedic surgery in Singapore and works with the cutting edge technology to treat his patients from all over Asia.

There are many patients who are suffering from knee arthritis for which eventually the mainstay of treatment would be a total knee replacement. However, even after such radical measures, more often than not, the patients feel unsatisfied as the implants do not function like normal knees.

Today, with the technological advancements, the knee replacement surgery has evolved with the revolutionary robotic system called MAKOplasty. With this latest robotic system, Dr Chew can now retain the healthy parts of the worn out joint while removing the damaged segments of the knee. The process is called partial knee replacement.

The MAKOplasty robotic surgery leads to a more-natural knee functionality and a faster recovery time. After the surgery the patient needs to be admitted in the hospital for only three days and can get back to their day-to-day activities like walking or even running within a period of two to three weeks. Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital is the first and only hospital in Singapore to offer MAKOplasty to its patients, Dr Chew said.

Dr Gerald Tan, senior consultant in urology is one of the most prominent robotic surgeons at the Mount Elizabeth. His area of interest lies in treating urological disorders like prostate cancer and bladder reconstruction by using leading edge Da Vinci Robotic system. Prostate cancer is the fastest growing type of cancer in Bangladesh.

After careful diagnosis, Dr Tan would suggest his patient to go for robotic prostatectomy which is considered to be of gold standard even in the USA. The Da Vinci Robotic System allows the surgeon to operate through just a few small incisions. This leads to a faster recovery and the patient is required only three-four days of hospital stay. Within a few months of this surgery the patients retain their sexual functions and lead a normal life.
