Standing crops damaged due to heavy rainfall

JHENIDAH, July 23 (UNB): Standing crops on over 12,027 hectares of land had been damaged due to the heavy rainfall in the district during the last three days.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said farmers of the district set a target to bring 90,823 hectares of land under transplanted Aman cultivation this season with an output target of 2.49 tonnes.
But 8,000 hectares of the transplanted Aman went under rainwater in the last three days.
Meanwhile, vegetables on 2400 hectares, betel-leaf on 712 hectares and chili on 915 hectares have been damaged by the heavy rainfall, farmers said.
Moreover, a number of brinjal and banana fields were also washed away. The rain also damaged seedbeds on 2,500 hectares of land, the sources said.
Deputy Director of DAE Abdul Hakim Sarker told the news agency that the farmers would face a seed crisis next season as seedbeds on vast tracts of land were damaged by the flashflood.
Besides, fish worth Tk 100 million from 15,000 ponds and seven baors had also been washed away, he added.
Officials said the nonstop rain damaged a number of 'kucha houses' and educational institutions in the district.
